The Molokai to Oahu paddle board race is considered the ultimate race for paddle boarding. It is a 32 mile race from Kalua Koi on Molokai to the beach at the Maunalua Bay Beach Park bath house on Oahu. The winner of this race generally considered the best paddle boarder in the world and that is especially true for the prone paddlers. There are other big races for stand up paddle boarders which are more important for them. Prone paddling has many less races that are important and for the most part a paddler must gain respect by doing well in either Molokai to Oahu or the Catalina crossing. The Catalina race is actually longer at 39.6 miles but it is considered an easier race. This is because the channel between Molokai and Oahu can be very rough with huge swells while the waters around Catalina are usually a lot calmer. There are different classes in the race which are determined by length of the board. The longer the board is the longer it will glide so a longer board is much easier and faster. The class’s are stock(12ft.), 14 foot, and unlimited. The stock class is considered the most pure and hardest way to get across the channel. The stock racers get the most respect and the best paddlers are normally found in that category. Jaimie Michel is considered the best paddle boarder in the world and has been dominant in the sport since 2002. Recently paddle boarding has become more popular and more people have joined in. Jack bark who is the son of Joe Bark (shaper for Bark paddle boards which are considered the best in the world) has had success in Molokai at the age of 21.
